Tennessee football podcast: Is coach Butch Jones’ fate already sealed?

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — ESPN’s “College Gameday” talked at length Saturday about the job security of Tennesee coach Butch Jones.

Heisman Trophy winner and former Michigan wide receiver Desmond Howard said Jones “looks like he’s in danger of losing his team.” ESPN analyst Lee Corso said the 41-0 loss to Georgia on Sept. 30 was the “final nail in the coffin.”

WMNL’s Josh Ward reacts to the negative comments from the ESPN crew, specifically about if Jones has lost the locker room or not.

Wide receiver Marquez Callaway liked a tweet calling Jones a worse coach than Georgia Southern’s Tyson Summers. Callaway later explained the like was to show his friend he had seen the tweet.

Rumors of fights at practice have also swirled around the program the past few weeks. From the outside, the team could look split, especially if one believes every rumor that has surfaced.

This week poses the perhaps the most pivotal game of Tennessee’s season. South Carolina will come to Knoxville, Tenn., this Saturday.

The Gamecocks played well last week in the 48-22 win over Arkansas. The defense came away with two scores on a 34-yard Skai Moore interception return and a T.J. Brunson 73-yard fumble return.

Tennessee’s offense has struggled on offense most of the season. The bye week seemed like the perfect time to find some cohesion and possibly a spark.

The coaching staff needs to get the offense working against a South Carolina team coming to town after looking impressive the week before. Otherwise, the calls for Jones’ job from the fan base will only intensify.
