Steve Spurrier: Another coach should give Kirby Smart a run for SEC Coach of the Year
While many view Georgia’s Kirby Smart as the leading candidate to win SEC Coach of the Year, Steve Spurrier doesn’t think he should be a lock to take home the honor.
That’s because Spurrier likes what he sees from his successor at South Carolina, Will Muschamp.
Speaking to The State this week, Spurrier praised the job that Muschamp has done this season in Columbia.
“Everybody’s talking about (Smart) and they’re playing great, but certainly Will does deserve some (consideration), too,” Spurrier said.
The Gamecocks are 6-2, becoming bowl eligible with a whole month of football left. Meanwhile, the team is 4-2 in SEC play and is riding a three-game winning streak entering its matchup against Smart’s second-ranked Bulldogs, who very well could be No. 1 in the first College Football Playoff rankings that will be unveiled on Tuesday night.
Spurrier says it brings him joy to see how Muschamp is doing with the school that he led for 10 full seasons before stepping away after six games in 2015.
“Heck yeah, I’m happy,” Spurrier said. “I call him every now and then and congratulate him. They are playing well. I leave him a voice mail every now and then and he’ll leave me one back.”
This season marks the first time South Carolina has earned bowl eligibility before November since 2013, which was the last of the school’s three straight 11-win seasons under the Head Ball Coach.
