South Carolina-Vanderbilt preview, keys to the game
Before South Carolina coach Will Muschamp turns his attention to his first appearance in Sanford Stadium in garnet and black, he and the Gamecocks have some business to tend to in Columbia, S.C. It’s Homecoming weekend. Vanderbilt is in town.
Muschamp’s first win in his second stint as a head coach in the SEC came in last season’s opener against the Commodores. At 5-2 (3-2 SEC) with the SEC East chase still unsettled, South Carolina’s second-year coach won’t look ahead to next weekend’s game against Georgia.
Not that he would for another game It’s truly a one-week-season for the Gamecocks, as they head down the back stretch of the 2017 schedule. But a win would clinch a bowl trip for the second-straight year.
“We’re focused on Vanderbilt right now. Anything past that really doesn’t matter,” Muschamp said. “We have to accomplish what we need to accomplish on Saturday afternoon. That’s been our focus. We haven’t talked about anything other than Vanderbilt in our organization.”
Besides, a loss to Derek Mason’s bunch would pretty much eliminate a trip to the SEC title game in Atlanta, and further delay a bowl-clinching-win.
The coach-speak won’t go anywhere if South Carolina wins, no matter what happens between Georgia and Florida.
Keep winning. Keep tacking on the implications. It’s as simple as that.
