Paul Finebaum: Butch Jones ‘done’ with pathetic performance against South Carolina

Paul Finebaum made a big — and tough — prediction about Tennessee coach Butch Jones.

On Saturday, the noted ESPN analyst had strong words for Jones when asked about the hot-seat situation for the Volunteers coach. Tennessee is 3-2, and the Vols are coming off an embarrassing 41-0 loss to Georgia last Saturday at Neyland Stadium.

Speaking on ESPN’s SportsCenter, Finebaum said Jones could be fired if Tennessee loses in rough fashion to South Carolina next Saturday in Knoxville.

“I think they have the pink slip in Knoxville in pencil,” Finebaum said on the show. “I don’t think Butch Jones can afford a loss next week to South Carolina with Alabama the following week. If he loses at home to South Carolina with another pathetic performance, I think he is done.”

For sure, Butch isn’t in a good spot. It wasn’t so much the loss to Georgia that hurt, because the Bulldogs are a strong team. But the way in which the Vols face-planted at home was a brutal result.

It’s possible that Jones will salvage this season and his job. But Finebaum is right: A victory against South Carolina next Saturday, after a much-needed bye week, is needed in a big way for Jones to change the narrative about his program.
