LSU football podcast: Meet Mario Jerez, the Spanish Voice of the Tigers

LSU football is the No. 1 topic of discussion every day on SEC Country’s One Team, One Podcast. Host Carter ‘The Power” Bryant is joined in this episode by the Spanish Voice of the Tigers Mario Jerez. Bryant asks Jerez about his exuberant Tiger football calls on 97.5 FM La Fabulosa, how similar SEC football is to international soccer, what he plans to do with his career and so much more. 

Mario Jerez loves LSU

Growing up the son of Guatemalan immigrants, Jerez grew up in New Orleans and is a proud broadcast journalism graduate of the LSU Manship School of Mass Communication. Both he and Bryant are former Sports Directors for the student radio station 91.1 KLSU.

Jerez explains how he became the Spanish voice of the Tigers with the help of good timing and a hurricane. Once he was given the opportunity, he never looked back. Bryant is also amazed with the difficulty of calling games in Spanish despite mostly speaking English when not calling games.

How soccer and SEC football are similar

Jerez’s broadcasting is like listening to a Spanish soccer commentator call a game. It is clearly evident when he gives his signature “Toooooooooouchdown” calls when the Tigers reach paydirt.

The passion of soccer and college football are intertwined says Jerez. He says both fan bases live and die with the results of their team.

SEC picks

Bryant made you rich again last week, telling you to take Mizzou -14 against Idaho. The Tigers cleared easily with a 68-21 final score. He believes this week’s slate of games are tricky, but feels confident betting an SEC road favorite. Find out who below!
